Ballet is the foundation and core of dance. It is theatrical –  utilizing costumes, scenic design and lighting. It can tell a story or express a thought, concept or emotion.

Jazz is an expressive and energetic dance style that encourages strong technique, builds strength and promotes individual style. Class begins with a thorough warm-up and centre exercises. Students will then progress through a series of jumps, turns and combinations moving across the floor. We’ll end each class by teaching students a short piece of choreography. In our jazz classes, we use fun, popular music as well as classic jazz and Broadway genres.

Performed by the likes of Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire and Shirley Temple, tap is a musical dance form characterized by sounds made by the feet on the floor as a form of percussion. In class, students will learn how to create various rhythms in syncopation with music as well as perform intricate footwork.

Lyrical dance is a style of dance created from the fusion of ballet with jazz and contemporary dance techniques and is a “cousin” to those styles. The emergent lyrical style has a relatively recent history and a genesis based on the coming together of ballet with rock/folk/pop/alternative music and a variety of jazz dance styles and modern dance.

Contemporary is a unique dance style, incorporating classical, modern and jazz styles of dance all into one. Strong technique is required in contemporary dance, as it combines the strong and controlled leg work of ballet and modern dance’s stress on the torso. It employs contact-release, floor work, fall and recovery, and demonstrates a strong, playful element of musicality.

Acro is a style of dance that combines classical dance technique with precision acrobatic elements. Acro combines an athletic character and unique choreography to seamlessly blend acrobatics and dance.

Hip Hop is a fast-tempo, high energy, urban style of dance that encompasses a variety of techniques including breaking, locking and popping. In this dynamic class, students will start with a warm-up and instruction of movement concepts and conclude by learning choreography to R&B, Pop and Old School Hip Hop music.

Musical theatre is a form of theatrical performance that combines songs, spoken dialogue, acting and dance. The story and emotional content of a musical – humor, pathos, love, anger – are communicated through words, music, movement and technical aspects of the entertainment as an integrated whole.
