All About Barre

Boogie Down is the only dance studio in Burlington to offer Barre exercise classes. Naturally, we’ve been getting tons of questions about them! Without further ado, here are some of the answers to our most frequently asked questions about Barre classes!

How early should I arrive?

If it’s your first Barre class, we suggest you arrive about 15 minutes early so you can introduce yourself to your instructor and let her know about any injuries you might have before class starts. That way, she will be able to provide you with modifications for any movements that might aggravate your injury during the class.

Which class should I take?

Here at Boogie Down, we offer 3 main Barre classes. The first, mixBarre, combines strengthening exercises with cardio movement for a good full body workout. ironBarre, our second Barre class, is more focused on strengthening and sculpting those muscles. maxBarre is our cardio class – take this class if you want to sweat!

How much dance experience do I need?

NONE! Boogie Down’s Barre classes are for everybody! We offer tons of modifications for all the movements in our classes, whether you’re looking for a more intense workout or something lighter on the joints. If you’re nervous about trying our classes because you’ve never danced before, PLEASE don’t let that stop you from coming!

What should I wear to class?

Ideally, you should wear something form fitting so our instructors can get a better look at your alignment during class. Just wear something you feel good in! What’s important is that you’re having fun and getting a good sweat in. 🙂 Oh, and there are no shoes in the studio – grip socks or bare feet please!

What should I bring?

A water bottle, yoga mat and a good attitude! We’ll provide you with everything else!

What kind of equipment is used?

During our barre classes, we use yoga mats, a resistance band and two weighted balls to help develop your muscles. That said, if a certain movement doesn’t feel good with the equipment, you can always do it on its own!

Can men take classes?

Absolutely! Although our classes are mostly made up of women, we’ve got plenty of men who come in on a regular basis and love our classes!
