What’s a Good Age for My Child to Start Ballet?

“What’s the best age for my child to start dance?”

It’s a question we get asked all the time! The answer? There is no right age–it depends entirely on your child. At Boogie Down, we start classes for children as young as three years old. Having said that, that doesn’t mean your child can’t start to dance at age 8 or 9! Just like learning to walk, talk and read, there is no set ‘schedule’ for learning how to dance. It’s something that comes naturally to some and takes a little more work for others.

“But if I enrol my child at age 8 or 9, won’t he or she be behind?”

Not necessarily!

Our classes for young children are much less formal than a typical ballet class. Let’s face it–children between the ages of 3 and 7 don’t have very long attention spans! Instead of doing a set of exercises at the barre and on the floor, our junior ballet classes are very loosely organized and involve lots of fun activities. We don’t actually start to introduce any formal ballet training until about age 8–so if your child doesn’t start until then, he/she won’t have to worry about being behind!

Think your child is ready to start dance? Send us an email at info@boogiedown.ca or visit us at the studio to sign him/her up for classes today!
